Phone Service

In addition to Brooklyn and Holiday Lake, local telephone calls can be made to the towns of Guernsey, Hartwick, Ladora, Malcom, Montezuma, and Victor.

*All charges are monthly except installation and prices shown do not include taxes or fees. A Cooperative membership is required to obtain service. This membership is $25 and is due at the time of application for service. This membership fee will be refunded to you if you disconnect your service. 


Long Distance Service

Brooklyn Mutual Telecommunications Cooperative provides long distance services to our customers as part of our on-going vision as a complete telecommunications service provider. We offer long distance service at affordable rates and we will convert your current long distance service to our services. 

BMTC keeps your monies at home - where they benefit you the most. Having your long distance and local service company together under one roof offers you benefits such as complete customer service from one local office. As an added convenience, your monthly statement includes both local and long distance charges. 

Our goal is to provide low, stable rates to our customers. As a subscriber, you are a cooperative member, truly making this your long distance company.

Calling Features

  • 900 Block - Free
    Block outgoing calls to 900 numbers.

  • Caller ID - $5.00
    Requires phone with caller ID capability or a caller ID box.

  • Non-published Number - $1.00
    Your name and number will not be published in the directory. Additionally, your name will come up “Private” on caller ID.

  • Distinctive Ring - $7.50

  • Three Way Calling - $1.50
    Allows you to add a third party to your conversation, without operator assistance, whether you received or placed the first call. 
    To Setup: During an existing call, press and release the switch hook to place the first call on hold, recall dial tone is received. Dial the third party (local or long distance). When the person answers, you may have a private conversation. To bring in the person "on hold", press and release the switch hook. This will connect the three people on one call. 
    To End:  If one of the other people hangs up, you will still be connected to the other call. If you hang up, the call will be disconnected.

  • Call Waiting - $1.50
    Allows you to answer a second call when you are on the phone. If you hear a beep during a telephone call, you have Call Waiting. 
    To Answer:  Press and release the switch hook to put the first call on hold. You will be connected to the incoming call. To return to the original call, press and release the switch hook again. You may alternate between calls in this manner.

  • Caller ID Block - $2.00 (per line)
    This is blocked for every call. We have a form in the office which needs to be signed to provide this service.

  • Call Forwarding - $1.50

All charges are monthly except installation.

Calling Feature Instructions

  • Busy Call Forward
    Activation code:
     *68 - After *68 is pressed, the subscriber hears a confirmation dial tone. The subscriber then enters the forward-to DN. If the forward-to DN is invalid or if CFBL is already activated, an announcement informs the subscriber. 
    Deactivation code: *88 - If CFBL is already deactivated, an announcement informs the subscriber.

  • Call Forward No Answer
    Activation code:
     *92 - After *92 is pressed, the subscriber hears a confirmation dial tone. The subscriber then enters the forward-to DN. If the forward-to DN is invalid or if CFDA is already activated, an announcement informs the subscriber. 
    Deactivation code: *93 - If CFDA is already deactivated, an announcement informs the subscriber.

  • Call Forward Variable
    This feature enables the subscriber to redirect incoming calls to another line regardless of the status (busy or idle) of the subscriber’s line. When the call forwarding variable feature is activated, the subscriber’s line, if idle, receives a ring reminder when a call has been forwarded. The subscriber cannot answer calls at the base station while CFV is active, but can originate calls.
    Activation code: *72 - After *72 is pressed, the subscriber hears a confirmation dial tone. The subscriber then enters the forward-to DN. If the forward-to DN is invalid or if CFV is already activated, an announcement informs the subscriber. 
    Deactivation code: *73 - If CFV is already deactivated, an announcement informs the subscriber.


Relay Iowa

Relay Iowa, a program of the Iowa Utilities Board, makes it possible for individuals who can hear, are deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing, or have difficulty speaking to communicate with each other using the telephone.

Lifeline Assistance

Lifeline is a plan authorized by the FCC that assists qualified low-income Iowans by providing a monthly reduction on their telephone bill. Please contact Brooklyn Mutual Telecommunications Cooperative for further details.

Note: Low-income telephone assistance does not cover the cost of a telephone or the cost of wiring inside your home.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the program you must meet income-based criterion currently defined as at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guideline OR participate in at least one of the following:

  • Medicaid

  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

  • Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)

  • Veterans Pension or Survivors Pension

  • Tribal Programs

To apply for the Low-Income Telephone Assistance Program:

  1. Apply online at https://www.lifelinesupport.org and set up an account.

  2. Once your eligibility is confirmed, take a picture of the screen or print the Eligibility Decision confirmation and bring it to the office of Brooklyn Mutual Telecommunications Cooperative.

  3. Bring documentation of the qualifying program you are enrolled in to the telephone office.

  4. The representative at the telephone office will then sign you up for the lifeline program. You will be required to re-certify your eligibility each year. You will be contacted prior to the anniversary date of your acceptance in the program. You will need to complete and return the form along with the eligibility documentation to the telephone office before your benefit service anniversary date. The telephone company will remove your Lifeline benefit if this recertification is not completed timely.
